Armenian Genocide Commemorations
Throughout the past decade, it has become the norm for the Armenian community in Los Angeles to commemorate the Armenian Genocide under the leadership of the United Armenian Council, a body comprised of representatives of leading Armenian organizations. In general, the participants of this body have been from ten organizations; the three national political parties, the four religious denominations, and representatives of the basic humanitarian and compatriotic associations.
In 2010, the 95th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide was once again commemorated with the leadership of the United Armenian Council, with the participation of many more humanitarian and compatriotic associations. As in previous years, the Council only began planning during the months of January-February with little time to organize the events effectively.
Per the Council’s request, in an effort to be more productive, the participating organizations concurred that the activities of the Council should not be limited to organizing functions during the month of April. The Council should actively organize commemoration-based events throughout the year and in advance of the upcoming year’s Genocide Commemoration activities.
Within this framework and with the approval of the participating organizations, the year- round operations of the Los Angeles Council of Genocide Commemoration were launched.
